Have a Hidden Water Leak?

Water and sewer pipes are under constant pressure. Since they are often buried underground, you may not know there is a leak or a break until it is too late. One sign of an underground break is the appearance of muddy or cloudy water coming from the tap. This type of emergency can cause extensive water damage and costly repairs if not handled quickly.

Is Your Sewer Line Backing Up?

A backed up sewer line is also considered an emergency. Sewer back ups are caused by misaligned pipe joints, collapsed pipes, or debris in the sewer system. Debris includes soil settlement, invasive tree roots, or grease build up. Sewers can also back up from items that enter your toilets and drains, such as hair, non food oils and chemicals, paper towels, anti-freeze, and solvents. Items that will not dissolve should never be placed where it will travel into the sewer line.

Experiencing a Burst Pipe?

Freezing temperatures can cause pipes to burst, causing significant damage in a short amount of time. Pipes burst in freezing temperatures because they are under pressure from frozen water. Even if a pipe is strong enough to handle the occasional freeze, if it happens often enough, the pipe will eventually weaken and burst.

Most pipes are covered with insulation or located where temperatures rarely reach freezing. If insulation fails, water can freeze in the exposed area, causing a combination of freezing water and flowing water pressure. This can also cause a pipe to burst.

To prevent your pipes from freezing and bursting during the winter, we recommend keeping a trickle of water running in your faucet. Flowing water is less likely to freeze.

Experiencing a Burst Pipe?

To prevent water damage, we recommend installing a sump pump. This is a small pump installed into the lowest part of a basement or crawl space. It helps keep the area under a building dry and prevents flooding. Sump pumps are typically installed in a sump pit; excess water flows into the pit and is then pumped away from the building so the basement or crawl space remains dry. There are various types of sump pumps on the market, including those with Internet connection, as well as battery backups and water powered units.
