How Can You Tell If You Have a Gas Leak?

In most cases, you can tell right away whether or not you have a gas leak. If you suddenly smell natural gas or propane, then there is a good chance that a leak is occurring.

There are other ways of detecting a leak as well. If your gas bill has become relatively high even though you have not increased your use, you have a leak. If you have a holding tank, you may find that the tank is emptying itself much more rapidly, requiring more frequent refills.

Even if you are not noticing signs of a gas leak, we recommend regular inspections to test for potential leaks.

What’s Used to Detect Gas Leaks?

When we visit your home to evaluate the health of your gas system, we use a few different techniques to determine whether or not a gas leak is present.

A gas leak detection device measures the amount of gas in the air and is used throughout the entire home (especially near gas lines) to ensure that there is no excess gas in the air. If it detects an abnormal amount of gas, it will alert us.

Other detection methods include checking lines for hissing, and coating pipes and joints with a solution to check for air leaks. We use the most effective method for your situation to ensure the safety of you and your household members or colleagues.

How Can You Prevent Gas Leaks?

Avoid unnecessary leaks and gas line repairs by keeping a few simple things in mind.

Pipes, joints, and connections should be protected and inaccessible to children or pets to prevent damage to the lines. Avoid attempting repairs on your own, as this can lead to further damage. To ensure that your property doesn’t develop an ongoing gas leak problem, consider regular gas line maintenance. We help customers gain greater peace of mind with periodic gas line evaluations that are meant to catch potential leaks before they become a larger problem.
